MODERATOR BIO

Dr. Tiffany López – Dean, Claire Trevor School of the Arts, UC Irvine

Dean Tiffany Ana López is a visionary artist, administrator and proven champion for diversity and inclusion. Dr. López previously served as vice provost for inclusive excellence at Arizona State University (ASU). Prior to ASU, Dr. López spent more than two decades at UC Riverside, where inclusion and community engagement were instrumental to her teaching, research and creative activities. She has spent nearly 30 years in the UC system, including her time as a graduate student at UC Santa Barbara, to her years as a faculty member and now Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts.

As a hybrid theater scholar and artist (dramaturge), Dr. López’s work explores how people and communities tell stories about trauma and violence and the impact of creativity in launching paths for personal transformation and social change. She is a founding member of the Latino Theater Alliance of Los Angeles. She has also worked with numerous theaters, including the Mark Taper Forum, Cornerstone Theater Company and Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Dr. López is the granddaughter of migrant farmworkers and is a first-generation college student.  She left home at age 15 and began as a community college transfer student. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English at California State University, Sacramento and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in English at UC Santa Barbara.

La Dean Tiffany Ana López es una artista visionaria, administradora y defensora probada de la diversidad y la inclusión. Anteriormente, la Dra. López se desempeñó como vicerrectora de excelencia inclusiva en la Arizona State University (ASU). Antes de ASU, la Dra. López pasó más de dos décadas en UC Riverside, donde la inclusión y el compromiso comunitario fueron fundamentales para su enseñanza, investigación y actividades creativas. Andres Chavez – Executive Director, National Chavez Center

As executive director of the National Chavez Center (NCC), Andres Chavez, 30, leads the arm of the Cesar Chavez Foundation that educates and promotes the legacy of his grandfather across the nation. Prior to being named executive director of the NCC, Andres worked as director of strategic initiatives with the Cesar Chavez Foundation. Andres moved forward new foundation initiatives and projects, assisting its four funds: Communications, Housing, and Economic Development, Education, and the National Chavez Center. 

The youngest son of Socorro and Paul Chavez, Cesar Chavez’s middle son, Andres was raised at La Paz in the farm worker movement. Andres grew up greeting visitors, taking them on tours, and sharing his grandfather’s history as well as participating in countless marches, rallies, picket lines, demonstrations, and political campaigns.

Andres graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Bakersfield in 2016, with a B.A. degree in Public Policy and Administration. He was active in student and community life, organizing immigration rights rallies, the first campus Hispanic Heritage Month observances, and opening a community garden in an underserved neighborhood. 

After serving as political director for Emilio J. Huerta’s Central Valley campaign in California’s 21st Congressional District, he helped establish the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at California State University, Sacramento, helping farm workers obtain their GED degrees. Andres worked with the California State Fair and Exposition, the public agency running the state fair, aiding its legislative outreach and lobbying efforts.

Como director ejecutivo del National Chavez Center (NCC), Andres Chavez, de 30 años, lidera la rama de la Cesar Chavez Foundation que educa y promueve el legado de su abuelo en todo el país. Antes de ser nombrado director ejecutivo del NCC, Andres trabajó como director de iniciativas estratégicas con la Cesar Chavez Foundation. Andres impulsó nuevas iniciativas y proyectos de la fundación, ayudando a sus cuatro fondos: Comunicaciones, Vivienda y Desarrollo Económico, Educación y el Centro Nacional Chávez.

El hijo menor de Socorro y Paul Chavez, el hijo del medio de Cesar Chavez, Andres, se crió en La Paz en el movimiento de trabajadores agrícolas. Andres Alegria – Film Editor/Producer/Community Activist

Andres Alegria is a producer of documentary films and a television editor. He began his career as a producer of news, documentary and cultural radio programming. He produced and hosted programming for 10 years for public radio including KPFA in Berkeley, Pacifica Radio and NPR, focusing on Chicano and Latin American affairs, including the struggle of the farm workers for decent working conditions and the right to organize.

Since then, Andres has been a television editor and producer for over 40 years with credits that include national and local news, documentaries and nationally syndicated programs for all the major networks both commercial and public. He has co-produced three internationally distributed independent documentaries with the Freedom Archives in San Francisco. In addition to producing independent films and videos, he currently edits and manages post production for Hoff Productions, a major producer of television programming for U.S. and international markets.

Andres Alegria es productor de documentales y editor de televisión. Comenzó su carrera como productor de noticias, documentales y programación cultural para radio. Durante 10 años produjo y presentó programas para radios públicas, entre ellas KPFA en Berkeley, Pacifica Radio y NPR, centrándose en asuntos chicanos y latinoamericanos, incluida la lucha de los trabajadores agrícolas por condiciones laborales decentes y el derecho a organizarse.

Abel Sanchez – Filmmaker/Musician/Songwriter/Activist

Abel Sanchez, born and raised in San Francisco, was given his first guitar as a Christmas present by his grandmother at age 10. Music has been a passion and important part of his life since. By age 15, Abel became involved in music as a bandleader, guitarist, and songwriter. Abel still leads his band Abel and the Prophets more than 50 years later.

In the late 60s, his band became one of San Francisco’s premier house bands opening many of the Bay Area hot spot nightclubs and packing the house with their soulful sounds. Abel’s friendship with Jorge Santana began in the early 70s when he was introducing Jorge to Funk from the southeast side of San Francisco and Jorge was introducing Abel to Latin Rock born primarily in San Francisco’s Mission District. They collaborated as friends and song writers until Jorge’s unexpected passing in 2020. In 1970 his band was signed to Fantasy Records and recorded their first album entitled Please World.

Abel took a hiatus from music in the 1980s to raise a family and begin a career with the US Postal Service, where he went on to earn a Master’s degree in Human Resources and Organizational Development at the University of San Francisco. While with the US Postal Service, Abel initiated a national campaign for the creation of US Postal stamp honoring Cesar Chavez. During this campaign he became closely connected with the Cesar Chavez family and foundation and his inspiration for Song for Cesar was born. Abel’s goal now is focused on utilizing the gift of the arts, combined with social justice works, to teach younger generations that they too can make a difference and contribute in making the world a better place for all.

Abel Sanchez, nacido y criado en San Francisco, recibió su primera guitarra como regalo de Navidad de su abuela cuando tenía 10 años. Desde entonces, la música ha sido una pasión y una parte importante de su vida. A los 15 años, Abel se involucró en la música como líder de banda, guitarrista y compositor. Abel todavía lidera su banda Abel and the Prophets más de 50 años después.

Dr. Xóchitl Chávez – Associate Professor of Music, UC Riverside

Dr. Xóchitl C. Chávez is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Riverside Department of Music, holding the distinction of being the first tenured Chicana in the UCR department and any UC system music program. She earned her Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology with a designated emphasis in Latin American and Latino Studies from UC Santa Cruz, complemented by interdisciplinary training in Museum Studies, Ethnomusicology, Folklore, and Social Documentation.

As an Activist Scholar and musician, Dr. Chávez's research centers on practices of accompaniment and sincere collaborative intention, ethically documenting Mexican Indigenous migrants and Latinos in the United States. Her forthcoming book, "La Guelaguetza: Oaxacan Migrant Festivals and the Making of Transborder Indigeneity" (University of Oxford Press, 2025), is based on extensive fieldwork in Oaxaca and California.

Dr. Chávez has secured grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and collaborated on projects like "Soundscapes of the People: A Musical Ethnography of Pueblo, Colorado." Institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage, have recognized her work, where she served as a curatorial advisor for the Inaugural Molina Family Gallery in the National Museum of the American Latino. She is collaborating with The Cheech Museum, furthering her commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

Bridging academic study with active participation in cultural practices, Dr. Chávez's research has been published in both Spanish and English in respected journals and through prestigious university presses, including the University of California Press and the University of Illinois Press.

La Dra. Xóchitl C. Chávez es profesora asociada en el Departamento de Música de la Universidad de California en Riverside, ostentando la distinción de ser la primera chicana titular en el departamento de la UCR y en cualquier programa de música del sistema de la UC. Obtuvo su doctorado en Antropología Cultural con énfasis designado en Estudios Latinoamericanos y Latinos en la UC Santa Cruz, complementado con formación interdisciplinar en Estudios de Museos, Etnomusicología, Folclore y Documentación Social.

Como académica activista y música, la investigación de la Dra. Chávez se centra en las prácticas de acompañamiento y sincera intención de colaboración, documentando éticamente a los migrantes indígenas mexicanos y latinos en Estados Unidos. Su próximo libro, “La Guelaguetza: Oaxacan Migrant Festivals and the Making of Transborder Indigeneity” (University of Oxford Press, 2025), se basa en un extenso trabajo de campo en Oaxaca y California.

La Dra. Chávez ha obtenido becas del Fondo Nacional para las Humanidades y ha colaborado en proyectos como “Soundscapes of the People: Una etnografía musical de Pueblo, Colorado”. Andrea Vasquez – Organizer, United Farm Workers

Andrea is a dedicated organizer with the United Farm Workers (UFW), where they have been a pivotal force in advocating for farmworker rights and social justice and revitalizing the labor movement for farm workers in San Diego County—a milestone not accomplished in over 30 years. A 2023 graduate of Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) with a B.S. in Plant Science, Andrea transferred from San Diego City College in 2019, bringing with them a passion for sustainable agriculture and labor rights. Their academic background, combined with first-hand experience with working class oppression in the agricultural industry, has fueled and deepened their understanding of social justice organizing, making them a powerful voice in the fight for labor equity and fair treatment of workers. In their talks, Andrea shares insights from their experiences, speaking on the importance of labor rights, social justice, and grassroots organizing in shaping a more equitable future emphasizing the importance of solidarity and collective action in the fight for workers' rights.

Andrea es una organizadora dedicada de United Farm Workers (UFW), donde ha sido una fuerza fundamental en la defensa de los derechos de los trabajadores agrícolas y la justicia social y en la revitalización del movimiento laboral de los trabajadores agrícolas en el condado de San Diego, un hito que no se había logrado en más de 30 años. Manuel Diaz – Farmworker/Activist

Manuel Diaz, born in Durango, Mexico, is an experienced agricultural worker with over thirty years in the field. He worked at Olive Hill Greenhouse for 5 years, joined the UFW during that time and was recently fired and retaliated against for being a leader. Recently joining the committee focused on agricultural labor issues, Manuel brings firsthand insights into the challenges and contributions of farmworkers. His perspective will add depth to the discussion of the film A Song for Cesar, exploring the legacy of labor leader Cesar Chavez and the ongoing struggles within the agricultural community and how the effort and value of farm workers isn’t recognized in this country. 

Manuel Díaz, nacido en Durango, México, es un trabajador agrícola experimentado con más de treinta años de experiencia en el campo. Trabajó en Olive Hill Greenhouse durante 5 años, se unió a la UFW durante ese tiempo y recientemente fue despedido y se tomaron represalias en su contra por ser un líder. Recientemente se unió al comité enfocado en cuestiones laborales agrícolas, y Manuel aporta conocimientos de primera mano sobre los desafíos y las contribuciones de los trabajadores agrícolas. Su perspectiva agregará profundidad a la discusión de la película Una canción para César, explorando el legado del líder laboral César Chávez y las luchas en curso dentro de la comunidad agrícola y cómo el esfuerzo y el valor de los trabajadores agrícolas no se reconocen en este país.
