Alumni Wang Chong presents a Global Conversations event at UCI

UC Irvine will host prominent Sinophone artist and Department of Drama alum Wang Chong. Chong will present “Global Conversations | Sinophone Experimental Performance (Zoom, Online)” with his colleagues River Lin and Xiaoyi Liu. The work challenges conventional notions of political, national, ethnic and cultural “Chineseness” and seeks to break artistic boundaries.

The event, organized by UCI Illuminations, will feature brief talks by Chong, Lin and Liu in conversation with the Director of Illuminations, Professor Daphne Lei.

Chong is the founder and artistic director of Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental based in Beijing. He is internationally renowned for his multimedia and documentary theatre experiments. Chong’s award-winning productions include The Warfare of Landmine 2.0 (Festival/Tokyo Award winner, 2013); Lu Xun (Best Performance of the Year, The Beijing News, 2016); and Teahouse 2.0 (One Drama Award winner, 2017).

River Lin is a performance artist and curator from Taiwan working across visual art, dance and queer culture contexts. Xiaoyi Liu is a curator, actor, playwright, director, and Artistic Director of Emergency Stairs in Singapore.

The talk will take place on Wed, Apr 19, 2023, at 4 p.m. on Zoom. To learn more, visit https://illuminations.uci.edu.
