Hailed for her “great sense of line and legato,” professional soprano and educator Melissa McCann (UCI M.F.A. ’14) is a rising young talent in opera. In the 2022-23 season, McCann appears with the McKinney Philharmonic and Dakota Pro Musica as the Soprano Soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, and Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri. McCann’s most recent season included the roles of Fortuna in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria (dell’Arte Opera Ensemble) and Soprano Soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra.
Career highlights include her Carnegie Hall debut under the baton of Kristof Van Grysperre and her performance of the American National Anthem for President Barack Obama at the University of California, Irvine, 50th Anniversary Celebration. Operatic highlights include Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos (Highlands Opera Studio); Xanthe in Die liebe der Danae (Pittsburgh Festival Opera); Lucy in Three Penny Opera (Pacific Opera Theatre); Polissena in Radamisto (Accademia Europa dell’Opera); and Musetta in La Bohème (Opera San José).
Dr. McCann, accompanied by Junko Nojima at the piano, returns to her alma mater to deliver a soul-stirring recital. A public masterclass will precede her performance on Monday, Oct. 23. Both events are free and open to the public.
