By Bess Wohl, winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Liberation!
As an exhausted film crew races through magic hour to finish an artsy action blockbuster in the New Mexico desert, artistic ambition, Hollywood pressures and environmental realities collide. A darkly comic “play in six takes,” Continuity explores the power — and limits — of storytelling in a world facing an ecological crisis.
Extending those questions beyond the stage, this UC Irvine production explores a more sustainable future for the performing arts. Inspired by initiatives such as the Broadway Green Alliance, the creative team will incorporate environmentally conscious production practices, from solar power to 100% recycled materials, with the goal of creating an “environmentally neutral” production that minimizes its overall impact.
“Wohl’s script… has iceberg-like depths beneath all its surface pleasures.” — The Wrap
“Smart, funny … Wohl’s dialogue is sharp and sprightly, confident and fluid through both the casual banter and the leaps into big emotions and ideas.” — New York Magazine
“At once thought-provoking and hilarious, Continuity is everything a ‘political’ play should be — articulating a point of view with respect for the audience while also challenging the audience, expanding worldviews, and tackling urgent questions about our existence.” — Stage Left
