12 units is required for full-time standing. You need to initially be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units for financial aid disbursement (understanding that you will be adding units later to be a full-time student). We recommend that you take 12-16 units in your first quarter to allow yourself time to adjust to the quarter system.

Please note:  ALL COURSES FOR YOUR MAJOR must be completed with a LETTER GRADE only.

If you have not passed/completed your entry level writing requirement, when you arrive on campus in September, please register for the Analytical Writing Placement Exam. You can view the current testing dates here. If you are not sure if you have completed this requirement, or if you don't know which Writing class you've placed into (39A, 37, 39B, etc.), email one of the Counselors.

It is our expectation that you will read all materials provided to you along with the links stated above and below.  If you have any questions, you may email one of our CounselorsThe email that was sent to you with this link should tell you when your enrollment window opens. At that time, you can register for classes using the recommendations below.

We will also be sending a follow-up email to all new incoming students with regard to mandatory events/meetings, auditions, and placement tests taking place during Welcome Week. You can keep an eye on the Welcome Week website throughout the summer, as it will be updated as information becomes available.

ART

FOR FALL COURSES TO ENROLL IN, HERE'S WHAT I WOULD SUGGEST FOR YOU:

1) ART 1A

2) ARTHIS 40A or 42A

3) 1 lower-division basic ART course (numbered 20-99)

DANCE

PLACEMENT AUDITIONS – All dance majors must attend the Fall Placement Auditions (to determine placement levels in BALLET, MODERN, and JAZZ), which will take place during Welcome Week.  More information will be sent to you later in the summer with the Placement Audition time, date, and location.

You may not enroll in your technique courses until you attend the Placement Auditions.  When planning your schedule, look through the Schedule of Classes and reserve time on your schedule for those techniques in which you plan to enroll, and where you think you may place.  The majority of students place into a level II, with a level III in their strongest technique.

1 technique per quarter policy: The Dance Department has a policy that you must successfully complete a technique course every quarter you are in residence at UCI.

Ballet, Modern, and Jazz – all students in the B.A. program must complete a minimum level II in all three techniques, with a minimum level III in either ballet or modern.  (Students who are pursuing a B.F.A. in Dance Performance must complete a minimum level III in all techniques with a minimum level IV in either ballet or modern.)  The courses in each series must be taken in order, Fall – Winter – Spring.

If you are interested in the B.F.A. Dance Performance or B.F.A. Dance Choreography, you can check out the degree requirements here.

Special Explanation regarding DRAMA 101 (a.k.a. “CREW” units):

4 units must be completed by the end of your first year; failure to complete 101 units by the deadline may result in probation and restriction from participating in any main stage shows.

101/Crew Sign-ups will take place during Week 1 of the Fall quarter with the PRODUCTION OFFICE in Drama 143; more information to follow in late August. All students are also required to attend a mandatory DRAMA 101 Orientation session with the Production Staff to discuss the different types of crew assignments (shop crew vs. show crew, lighting, scenic, sound, props, costume, strike crew, stage management, etc.) and the enrollment procedures for adding 101/crew units.
