Music Direction

A music director is a chameleon, often wearing many hats at once. Music directors come from varied backgrounds and disciplines, but share a common drive to create, collaborate, and make music with others.

At the heart of the M.F.A. in Music Direction are two guiding principles: equity and inspiration. The program prepares highly skilled music directors for professional work in the performing arts while encouraging individual curiosity, experimentation, and artistic voice. Through inquiry-driven exploration and rigorous training, students develop musical toolkits that support both creative expression and long-term professional practice.

This one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary program is housed within the Department of Drama at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts in Southern California.

Areas of Study

Students receive focused instruction and mentorship from faculty and industry professionals across five core areas:

  • Vocal pedagogy and coaching

  • Conducting

  • Composition, orchestration, and arranging

  • Music production

  • Independent projects

Together, these areas provide a comprehensive foundation for contemporary music directors working across theatrical and performance-based environments.

Collaborative Experiences

During the three-year residency, music direction students collaborate extensively with other M.F.A. Drama students in acting, directing, design, stage management, and dramaturgy. These collaborations bridge coursework with production-based experiences, strengthening artistry while building a professional network within the UCI Drama community.

Project-based work also provides access to additional campus resources, including the Meyer Sound Design Studios and interdisciplinary partnerships with programs in the School of Music.

Production Opportunities

Music directors participate in both small- and large-scale musical productions throughout their time at UC Irvine, including the development of new work. These projects involve collaboration with M.F.A. Drama students as well as undergraduate B.A. and B.F.A. Music Theatre cohorts.

Students take on a wide range of responsibilities, including performing in orchestra pits, programming keyboard rigs, composing original music, and supporting the production process. In the third year, each student serves as music director and conductor for a mainstage musical, guiding the project from first rehearsal through final performance.

Thesis productions have included Into the Woods, Bunkerville (world premiere), Company, Legally Blonde, and The Prom.

In addition to on-campus work, students participate in the New York Satellite Program in Music Theatre, gaining direct access to professional feedback from casting directors, choreographers, and music directors.

Professional Placement and Alumni

Graduates of the program work as music directors on Broadway, national tours, and regional stages, as well as in higher education and arts education settings across the country.

Financial Information

Students accepted into the program attend tuition-free through a partnership with the University of California. Teaching assistantships are awarded throughout the three-year program and include a monthly stipend to help offset living expenses.

Because enrollment is intentionally limited, only a small number of highly qualified applicants are admitted each year, allowing for focused mentorship and individualized training.
