M.F.A. Music Direction
Music Direction
A music director is a chameleon, often wearing many hats at once. Music directors come from varied backgrounds and disciplines, but share a common drive to create, collaborate, and make music with others.
At the heart of the M.F.A. in Music Direction are two guiding principles: equity and inspiration. The program prepares highly skilled music directors for professional work in the performing arts while encouraging individual curiosity, experimentation, and artistic voice. Through inquiry-driven exploration and rigorous training, students develop musical toolkits that support both creative expression and long-term professional practice.
This one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary program is housed within the Department of Drama at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts in Southern California.
Areas of Study
Students receive focused instruction and mentorship from faculty and industry professionals across five core areas:
Vocal pedagogy and coaching
Conducting
Composition, orchestration, and arranging
Music production
Independent projects
Together, these areas provide a comprehensive foundation for contemporary music directors working across theatrical and performance-based environments.
Collaborative Experiences
During the three-year residency, music direction students collaborate extensively with other M.F.A. Drama students in acting, directing, design, stage management, and dramaturgy. These collaborations bridge coursework with production-based experiences, strengthening artistry while building a professional network within the UCI Drama community.
Project-based work also provides access to additional campus resources, including the Meyer Sound Design Studios and interdisciplinary partnerships with programs in the School of Music.
Production Opportunities
Music directors participate in both small- and large-scale musical productions throughout their time at UC Irvine, including the development of new work. These projects involve collaboration with M.F.A. Drama students as well as undergraduate B.A. and B.F.A. Music Theatre cohorts.
Students take on a wide range of responsibilities, including performing in orchestra pits, programming keyboard rigs, composing original music, and supporting the production process. In the third year, each student serves as music director and conductor for a mainstage musical, guiding the project from first rehearsal through final performance.
Thesis productions have included Into the Woods, Bunkerville (world premiere), Company, Legally Blonde, and The Prom.
In addition to on-campus work, students participate in the New York Satellite Program in Music Theatre, gaining direct access to professional feedback from casting directors, choreographers, and music directors.
Professional Placement and Alumni
Graduates of the program work as music directors on Broadway, national tours, and regional stages, as well as in higher education and arts education settings across the country.
Financial Information
Students accepted into the program attend tuition-free through a partnership with the University of California. Teaching assistantships are awarded throughout the three-year program and include a monthly stipend to help offset living expenses.
Because enrollment is intentionally limited, only a small number of highly qualified applicants are admitted each year, allowing for focused mentorship and individualized training.

How to Apply
We are not seeking applications for Fall 2026 at this time.
Typically, applicants already have experience in aspects of music direction and are looking to refine and improve their knowledge base and experience in conducting, vocal coaching, rehearsal techniques, composing, arranging, and producing.
Excellent keyboard skills (including sight-reading), basic orchestra score-reading and conducting skills, and an understanding and passion for music theatre are expected of applicants.
The application deadline, including all required materials and letters of recommendation is March 1.
To apply to the M.F.A. Music Direction, a completed application and application fee ($135 for U.S. Citizens and lawful U.S. Permanent Residents, and $155 for all other applicants) is required. The application fee must be submitted online (checks will not be accepted). All graduate applications are submitted electronically and must be supported by appropriate academic transcripts from each college/university attended, two letters of recommendation, and resumé. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted online with the graduate application. Official transcripts must be provided only after a candidate has been accepted by the program and formally admitted to the university. All letters of recommendation must be submitted online. Music Direction resumés should be uploaded to the electronic application.
Submission of the Statement of Purpose is mandatory. Submission of the Personal History Statement is optional. The Department of Drama has no word/character minimum or maximum length requirements for these statements.
The GRE exam is not required.
Please be sure to specify Music Direction as your specific area of interest on the online application.
In addition to completing an online application, applicants are asked to send a resumé plus URLs (ex. youtube, vimeo, website) to video clips that show:
- Keyboard skills in 2-3 contrasting styles, with at least one being from the musical theatre genre
- 5 min max (per clip)
- Coaching or rehearsing an actor/ensemble in musical theatre repertoire from the keyboard or podium
- 30 min max
- Basic conducting skills with an ensemble or by yourself using an accompaniment track
- 10 min max
Following submission of applications and supporting materials, finalists will be contacted to schedule an audition/interview. Only persons who have submitted applications, fees, and resumes can be considered for an audition/interview.
Interviews are scheduled in coordination with the Music Theatre faculty and are held on campus here at UCI.
Applicants invited for an interview will be asked to:
1. Prepare two contrasting musical theatre accompaniments of your choosing. Selections should indicate piano skills and understanding of styles/genres. These should be different selections than the ones you submitted for your application.
2. Sight read from the piano.
3. Coach several actors (vocally, musically) on material in their books that the committee selects.
