M.F.A. Directing
The M.F.A. emphasis in Directing program is currently not accepting applications for Fall 2026 admission.
Directing | Core Values
The M.F.A. emphasis in Directing at UC Irvine is grounded in the belief that theatre should challenge and expand the mind, move the soul, and delight the spirit. The program is dedicated to training professional directors who aspire to create ambitious, thoughtful, and resonant theatre for the 21st century.
Directing requires more than inspiration. Directors must be able to shape ideas into fully realized productions, articulate vision, ask provocative questions, make complex decisions, and guide collaborative teams with clarity and purpose. The program emphasizes the development of these skills through a balance of hands-on creative work and rigorous academic study, supporting directors as both artists and intellectual leaders.
Applicants and Admission
Admission to the M.F.A. Directing program is highly selective and intended for individuals with the passion and potential to pursue professional directing careers. Successful applicants demonstrate imagination, intellectual curiosity, personal courage, and a deep commitment to storytelling and collaboration.
The program values directors who seek to challenge and expand their artistic vision while developing the skills necessary to lead creative teams with empathy, discipline, and integrity. Faculty mentorship is tailored to each student’s individual artistic voice and professional goals, fostering both growth and self-definition.
The Training
The M.F.A. Directing program is a three-year course of study grounded in practice, critique, coaching, and sustained creative inquiry.
In the first year, students focus on directing character-driven work, with emphasis on script analysis, rehearsal process, and collaborative communication. The second year shifts toward language-driven plays and deepens engagement with the components of production and leadership within creative teams. The third year centers on original, devised, and self-produced work, encouraging directors to articulate and realize a distinctive artistic voice.
The Productions
Directing students are actively engaged in production work throughout their time in the program. Each student directs work every quarter, whether in the classroom, student-directed projects, or fully realized productions.
During the second year, students direct full-length plays, and each director receives at least one fully produced main season production during their tenure. The third-year thesis production serves as a culminating artistic statement, reflecting the student’s creative vision, leadership, and professional readiness.
Professional Connections
UC Irvine offers directing students meaningful professional opportunities through strong relationships with leading regional theatres. These connections provide pathways to internships and assistant directing opportunities, allowing students to gain experience within professional rehearsal rooms and production environments while building industry relationships.
Nine graduate studio classes in directing, one of which is the creation of a thesis portfolio and resume; two courses in Foundations: Script Analysis and Genres and Theatre; one course in Multiculturalism; two courses as professional internships often with South Coast Repertory and/or Utah Shakespeare Festival; two courses in acting, may include movement, voice classes approved by the faculty program head; two seminars in dramatic literature, performance theory, criticism, theatre history; six projects of which one is the thesis and one is an off-site production; two design or stage management classes, approved by the faculty program head; and a minimum of three electives.
A total of 116 quarter units in graduate or approved upper-division undergraduate courses.

If attending a scheduled interview date is not possible, the department will attempt to arrange an alternative meeting in California when feasible.

Admission requires a verified guarantee of sufficient funds to complete the three-year program. Applicants who are unable to provide this guarantee are encouraged to pursue external funding sources, including home government grants and private foundation support.
