Eric Lindsay Named 2025 Lecturer of the Year
Recognized for exceptional achievements in undergraduate teaching
Eric Lindsay, lecturer specializing in musicianship, music theory and composition at the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts (UCI Arts), has been named the 2025 Lecturer of the Year by the UCI Celebration of Teaching. Part of the UC Irvine Division of Teaching Excellence & Innovation, the annual Celebration of Teaching honors faculty, instructors and teaching assistants who demonstrate exceptional commitment to undergraduate teaching, with winners selected from nominations by peers, students and staff across six award categories.
“This recognition means the world to me because it speaks to the incredible work my students are doing,” said Lindsay. “The classroom is a lab, a stage, and a sandbox all at once — and the students at Claire Trevor make it come alive in ways that constantly surprise and inspire me.”
Since joining UC Irvine in 2018, Lindsay has made a lasting impact on the Department of Music. In addition to developing large-enrollment online music courses for the broader campus community, he has collaborated with department leadership to design competency-based learning paths for music majors, integrating differentiated instruction and targeted support to meet students where they are. His approach reflects a deep commitment to equitable learning, expanding assessment methods to include collaborative performance, improvisation and composition — strategies that quickly identify areas for growth and provide tailored pathways for student success.
A composer-performer whose work spans opera, film and immersive installations, Lindsay holds advanced degrees in composition from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and the University of Southern California. His compositions have been performed by ensembles including eighth blackbird, the American Composers Orchestra in NYC, the New Juilliard Ensemble and the Pittsburgh Symphony. Lindsay’s teaching and creative work share a common thread — cross-disciplinary exploration that pushes boundaries and cultivates creative collaboration.
