Research at UCI Arts

At UCI Arts, research takes many forms. As part of a leading Research 1 university, our faculty and students generate new knowledge through creative activity, scholarly inquiry, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

From studio practice and performance to emerging technologies and community-based work, research in the arts is both a process and a public outcome, shared through exhibitions, performances and partnerships that extend beyond campus.

Message from the Associate Dean,
Research and Innovation

Research and innovation in the arts are all around us, embedded in the cultural works we produce, examine and experience. Arts research, like all research, is a process of systematic investigation in search of new conclusions and new meanings. Arts innovation is the complementary effort of bringing new methods and modes to life. For UCI Arts faculty and students, research and innovation are the seeds that grow into creative excellence.

UCI Arts Research and Innovation brings together facilities, funding programs and initiatives that support the school’s research, innovation and interdisciplinary activities. This work spans studying the science of movement in dance, researching modes of performance across cultures in drama, connecting performers across continents in music and developing new ways to present critical ideas in art. Research and innovation at UCI Arts have both local and global impact, supporting work that is urgent, relevant and award-winning.
