Sarah Koo Freeman Named 2026 Dean's Honoree

Claire Trevor School of the Arts music lecturer honored for teaching excellence
Sarah Koo Freeman, cello and chamber music lecturer in the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts Department of Music, has been named a 2026 Dean's Honoree by the UC Irvine Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation.
"I am truly honored to receive this recognition from the UC Irvine Division of Teaching Excellence & Innovation," said Koo. "The greatest joy of teaching is helping students discover not only their own artistic voice, but also how their music can bring people together, strengthen communities, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Working with our students is one of the greatest privileges of my career, and they inspire me every day."
Koo is one of 14 Dean's Honorees named this year, representing schools across UC Irvine. The recognition is part of the annual Celebration of Teaching, which since 1992 has honored more than 300 professors, lecturers, and teaching assistants for their contributions to undergraduate student learning and academic success. Nominated by peers, students, and staff, this year's winners and honorees span six award categories.
A graduate of The Juilliard School, Koo built a career as a performer in professional symphony and chamber settings before returning to teaching, where she has spent nearly a decade at UC Irvine.
The 2026 Celebration of Teaching Awards Ceremony will be held Thursday, Sept. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Conference Rooms at the Division of Continuing Education, 510 E. Peltason Dr., Irvine, CA 92617.
