Jon Lovitz, 69, is an actor and comedian known for “Saturday Night Live,” “Seinfeld” and the film “A League of Their Own.” He co-stars in the upcoming films “Redemption” and “Don’t Say Good Luck,” due Aug. 14 on Netflix. He spoke with Marc Myers.
I always wanted to perform. My dad was a doctor who originally wanted to be an opera singer and sang a lot at home, so maybe that was it.
I do know how the comedy thing started. One night when I was 5, I stayed over at a friend’s house. I couldn’t sleep. Suddenly, my friend sat bolt upright, made a face and dropped back down as if asleep a few times. I laughed hysterically and wanted to be funny like him.
