The Shakespeare scholar and dramaturg begins a tenure-track position in theatre arts

Emily Parise, Ph.D. ’26, has joined the Department of Theatre Arts at Baylor University as a tenure-track assistant professor. A Shakespeare scholar and dramaturg, Parise received the offer last spring, before she crossed the stage at commencement.

“I am extremely grateful to be the new tenure-track Baylor University Theatre faculty member, and to be given an opportunity to continue the research and teaching I began at Claire Trevor School of the Arts,” said Parise. “I received exceptional mentorship and support while at UC Irvine, particularly from my advisor, Dr. Ian Munro, as well as Dr. Zachary Price.”

Parise earned her doctorate in drama and theatre, with an emphasis in dramaturgy, from the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Her dissertation, Visible Bullets: Subversive Stage Properties in Shakespeare’s English and Roman History Plays, examines how the political potential of Shakespeare’s history plays is made visible through the stage and its properties.

She describes her method as object-oriented dramaturgy, an approach that turns scholarly attention back to the live event and to what audiences see on stage. Her work has been published by Early Theatre, Shakespeare Bulletin and Palgrave.

As a production dramaturg at UC Irvine, Parise worked on King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing. She also served as a UCI Pedagogical Scholar, leading trainings for graduate student teaching assistants in the school.

In 2024, Parise became a founding member of the Shakespeare Association of America Graduate Committee, which represents graduate students and early career scholars in the field. She served as its co-chair through 2026.

At Baylor, Parise teaches theatre history and graduate dramaturgy. She also works as a dramaturg for the Baylor New Play Initiative and the department’s main stage season.

Before coming to UC Irvine, Parise earned a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University and a master’s degree in theatre and performance studies from Washington University in St. Louis.
