Inoperative Community Documentary

The University of California, Irvine’s University Art Galleries presented The Inoperative Community: Exhibition X Practice, UCI 1965–2025, a landmark exhibition spanning all three campus galleries from September 27 to December 13, 2025. Curated by Juli Carson, Kevin Appel, and Sasha Ussef, the exhibition offered an expansive look at the galleries’ 60-year history through artworks, archives, and ephemera, tracing how generations of artists, curators, and scholars have shaped UCI’s artistic legacy and its broader cultural impact. Drawing on philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy’s concept of the “inoperative community,” the exhibition reframed this history as a dynamic, collective evolution rather than a linear narrative.

This mini-documentary captures the exhibition as it was experienced within the galleries, offering a visual journey through its archival depth and contemporary resonance. Through immersive footage of the spaces and featured works, the film reflects on how the University Art Galleries have served as a site of experimentation, dialogue, and interdisciplinary exchange. Together, the exhibition and film highlight the enduring influence of UCI’s creative community while opening new pathways for understanding art, collaboration, and institutional legacy.
