Celebrated for her dedication to cultivating emerging artists

Myrona DeLaney, professor of teaching in music theatre and head of the Music Theatre program at the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts (UCI Arts), has been named a 2025 Dean’s Honoree by the UCI Celebration of Teaching, part of the UC Irvine Division of Teaching Excellence & Innovation. The annual Celebration of Teaching honors faculty, instructors and teaching assistants who demonstrate exceptional commitment to undergraduate teaching, with winners selected from nominations by peers, students and staff across six award categories.

“It means so much for the Dean to recognize my work in this way,” said DeLaney. “Teaching is my passion. It’s all about helping other artists discover their potential, overcome challenges, and develop their authentic selves through the joy they find in music theatre.”

An educator, director and performer, DeLaney leads UC Irvine’s Music Theatre program with a focus on student-centered learning and professional preparation. Her directing credits at UCI Drama include Falsettos, Little Women, Seussical, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Urinetown, Legally Blonde and last year's UCI production of 9 to 5 the Musical in the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

“I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of Music Theatre excellence,” said DeLaney.  “To the understanding and development of the art form.  To open a space for UCI Arts in the profession.”

She has also directed The Fantasticks at the New Swan Shakespeare Festival and produced works for regional companies including Saddleback Civic Light Opera, Carnegie Hall, Segerstrom Center for the Arts and South Coast Repertory. Beyond directing, she has served as a vocal coach for recording projects and theatrical productions, and her artistry has been recognized both locally and nationally.

“I am thankful every day for this department and school," said DeLaney. "It’s a stellar environment to teach and share the joy of storytelling. It is wonderful to watch our graduates pursue their dreams and continue to use the training they receive at UCI Arts.”
