Chad Michael Hall is a choreographer, director, and dance filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He is an associate professor in the Department of Dance at UC Irvine, where he teaches all levels of modern and contemporary dance technique, choreography, contemporary partnering, dance and video, and screendance courses. He holds a B.A. in dance from Slippery Rock University (2000) and an M.F.A. in choreography from The Ohio State University (2004).
After graduating from Ohio State, Hall moved to Los Angeles to tour internationally with Diavolo/Architecture in Motion under artistic director Jacques Heim. He also performed with BODYTRAFFIC, the Regina Klenjoski Dance Company, and the Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, among others, and appeared in The Men Dancers: From the Horse’s Mouth, with performances at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City between 2012 and 2015.
Since 2006, Hall has worked as an independent choreographer, receiving residencies and commissions from universities, professional dance companies, and dance institutes across the United States and internationally, including Derida Dance Company, Idan Cohen Dance Company, Kibbutzim College, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Iowa, The Ohio State University, Loyola Marymount University, and Scottsdale College. His creative activity often operates at the intersection of corporeality and virtuality, exploring the dancer/camera relationship, film language, and editing techniques. His work has been supported by the City of West Hollywood Arts Division, the Jewish Federation of Orange County, Pentacle, Movement Research Global Practice Sharing, and UCI’s Institute for 21st Century Creativity.
Hall is the founder and director of MULTIPLEX DANCE (2013) and the creator of the West Hollywood Dance Festival (2015). His projects focus on how dance can empower and inspire people through programs and performances that engage communities in innovative and inclusive ways. He has developed partnerships with the Derida Dance Center in Bulgaria; Machol Shalem Dance House, Vertigo Dance Company, and Kibbutzim College in Israel; and the American College Dance Association in the United States, where he serves as Baja regional director and co-directs the ACDA National Screendance Festival.
His current research combines 360-degree video and virtual reality technologies with contemporary dance to invent new modes of creation, presentation, and audience engagement.
