August 6 – 17, 10 am – 3:30 pm

Making Music Apps is a two-week course that introduces students to programming techniques for Apple’s popular iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) that allow for the creation of custom music apps designed for ensemble-based music-making. Previous Creative Connections Projects

The Anatomy of Dance & American Graffiti - Shannon Leypoldt and Ching Ching Wong

Shannon and Ching Ching collaborated on large classroom projects in Irvine, Anaheim and Centralia school districts over the course of two years, focusing on English language learners and bringing poetry and literature to the dance floor, as well as teaching anatomy, injury prevention, and American dance technique by utilizing fun and melodic choreography. According to the teachers, students' vocabulary and language comprehension increased, especially for the second language learners. Teamwork was emphasized and successfully executed in these classrooms, which included children with special needs.

Vocal History and Performance Parts I & II - Belinda Lau and Connie Li

Belinda and Connie teamed-up to work with all the choral students of Vista Verde School in Irvine, developing a lesson plan that, included a history of Western vocal music and musical notation from Gregorian chant through the 21st century, and assisted in preparing choral students for school concerts by working with small ensembles on developing vocal technique and note reading.  The vocal students of Vista Verde came away from the experience with a strong sense of musical confidence, according to their teachers.

One On One Instruction - David Daniels and Elizabeth Kung Lee

David and Elizabeth teamed up with the music teachers of Vista Verde and Plaza Vista schools in Irvine  to support their efforts in band and orchestra education. David shadowed instructor Mark Ghiassi at both schools, creating the option for one-on-one instruction in wind and brass instruments. Elizabeth did the same for string teacher Naoko Maruko at Vista Verde. Both scholars spent time in the band and orchestra rooms offering technical correction and coaching to students. During their projects, both scholars were given opportunities to conduct students in classical pieces. Students were also invited to the Claire Trevor School of the Arts to attend a spring orchestral concert that included Dvorak's Symphony #9, a composition that had been studied in all the music classes during the year.

Costa Mesa High School Drama Project - Antonio McConville

Tony McConville, a Creative Connections scholar for three years, was matched with the drama and choral departments of Costa Mesa High School and conducted projects about stage management, auditioning techniques for musical theater, and vocal coaching. He was asked to return to work as the assistant director for the high school's production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and says that he has discovered a hidden talent for teaching and looks forward to developing that skill in the future.

TeWinkle Middle School Instrumental Music (Jazz) Project - James Garritson and Stefan Talmadge

James and Stefan worked together and separately as Creative Connections scholars for two years on a total of five projects. Their projects integrate jazz with an exploration of both American civil rights history and the basic principles of physics. The basics of Western music history, a survey of acoustic musical instruments, and the fundamental of music theory are approached and studied in depth. James and Stefan focused on music fundamentals and history, building on basic principles to introduce jazz theory to three band classes, which helped the youngsters acquire more understanding of note reading, proper care of instruments and basic principles of band playing. The school's music instructor credits the CTSA scholars with the students' education in teamwork, respect, and following directions, in addition to providing classroom support for lesson content.
