On Thurs., March 8, stars from Hollywood films, television, and the Broadway stage will converge at the Irvine Barclay Theatre when the Claire Trevor School of the Arts and UC Irvine celebrate the career and legacy of renowned dancer/choreographer and professor emeritus Donald McKayle.
The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with a VIP Cocktail Reception in the Irvine Barclay Theatre's Jade Room, where couples who have purchased $2,500 and $1,000 tickets and individuals who have bought $500 tickets can mix and mingle with the international celebrities who have arrived in Irvine to honor this living legend. The Tribute and performances from some of the dance world's best known talent will begin at 7:00 p.m., and a Backstage Reception of desserts and coffees will take place immediately following the show.
In a career spanning more than 60 years, Donald McKayle has made enormous contributions to the development of modern dance that have been recognized by the nation's most prestigious industry honors in film, theatre and dance. He has dramatically raised the profile and prestige of UCI's Dance Department through his artistry, mentorship and continued contributions to the field.
During his time at the University, Donald McKayle has trained and inspired several thousand students, and he has shaped a whole new generation of professional dancers, teachers and choreographers. He has left an indelible mark on the artistic community, and he has given back in countless ways to under-served populations throughout the world.
The monies raised by this event -- through ticket sales and sponsorships -- will help establish the Donald McKayle Fund for Modern Dance, which will enable the Claire Trevor School of the Arts to provide student scholarships, secure master classes with prominent artists and teachers, and commission exciting new works in modern dance.
The Tribute is being co-chaired by actress/dancer Debbie Allen, singer/actress Della Reese, and UC Irvine Chancellor and Mrs. Michael V. Drake. A highlight of the evening will be the unveiling of a Claire Trevor School of the Arts Star for Donald McKayle, which will later be installed in the School's very own Walk of Fame. This star will join Claire Trevor's in this specially designated area that has been established to honor a select number of persons whose impact warrants a permanent commemorative.
Professor McKayle will be debuting a new work, and dancers from the following companies also will be performing:
- Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
- Cirque du Soleil
- Cleo Parker Robinson Dance
- Dallas Black Dance Theatre
- Dance Theatre of Harlem
