The Artists in Residence Program in Studio Art at the University of California, Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts provides a critical bridge for those who have already earned a BA or BFA in any major. Whether your goal is gaining entrance into a graduate arts program or pursuing a new career in the arts, this intensive course of independent study can help you turn your passion for the arts into a career.
The two-track program – one for art making and one for curatorial practices – is created to meet your specific goals and provide the necessary framework to develop a portfolio of work. The hands-on experience, combined with the program’s Certificate of Completion, provides the solid foundation needed to pursue your artistic dreams.
Whether you choose the nine-month Artist’s Track or 12-month Curatorial Track, you will work directly with the Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, who serves as the program’s director, as well as other working artists or curators, and professors of UC Irvine’s renowned Studio Art Department. The Certification received upon completion is a recognized credential that could provide you with the competitive boost you need to pursue your artistic goals.
Specialized Programs
The School’s Artists in Residence Program in Studio Art is aimed at helping participants create art and develop proficiency; get “back into the game” if they’ve been out of school for a while; develop a new body of work or curatorial project; transition from undergraduate art to MFA studies or to a career in art; transition from a non-arts career; explore another medium; interact with a vibrant community of artists; and acculturate international participants into the U.S. arts scene.
The Artist’s Track program begins in mid-September with an Intensive Study Workshop -- a week-long technical workshop in to prepare you for the Artists in Residence experience. The program concludes in mid-June of the following year. During the course of the program, you will create art works under the general direction and guidance of the program director, an accomplished artist and educator. Works produced during the program and selected by those participating in the Curatorial Track will be exhibited during July and August in one of UC Irvine’s campus art galleries. At the conclusion of the program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion that will contain a description of your individualized program and what you have achieved.
For those in the Curatorial Track, the program begins with a week-long Intensive Study Workshop in mid-September, and the program formally concludes in late August of the following year. The course provides opportunities, accessibility and skill development necessary to work in art galleries and/or museums. The content-rich program provides knowledge of the issues surrounding exhibition design and the experience of selecting, organizing, installing and publicizing an exhibit in a modern gallery. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion that will contain a description of the their individualized program and their accomplishments.
Each program is individually tailored to the interest of the participant. Each participant works with the Claire Trevor School of the Arts Dean and with a faculty mentor to design their individualized program, which may consist of coursework from the University’s extensive catalog of courses through University Extension’s Access UCI Program; specialized readings; or seminars with other program participants.
All participants will meet periodically with the Dean to discuss their personal artistic direction and to critique and discuss their work; to receive personalized guidance for applying to graduate school or to discuss how to market their work. In addition, all participants in the Artist’s Track are required to exhibit in the program’s culminating exhibition, and all participants in the Curatorial Track are required to participate in the curation of that culminating exhibition.
Pre-requisites for Admission
Participants in either Track typically will already have earned a bachelor’s degree in a non-arts major or a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. All applicants must submit a personal statement or letter of intent. Artists must submit an electronic portfolio that will be reviewed by a panel of artists; curators must submit writing samples. All candidates will be interviewed by the program’s director. Curatorial candidates will also meet with the director of the University Art Galleries. GRE scores are not required for either Track.

There is an $80 non-refundable application fee for all. Once accepted into the program, a $1,000 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve admission space. The deposit will be applied to program costs.
Program Fees
Cost of the program is $12,500. Payment plans are available. Fee includes up to 2 courses through University Extension; on-campus parking; and, use of a personal studio for those in the Artist’s Track. Fee does not include materials.
