CTSA Launches Registration for 2015 Summer Academies in the Arts for High School and Middle School Students

IRVINE, Calif., (February 6, 2015) – The Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA) at the University of California, Irvine launched registration for its 2015 Summer Academies in the Arts today. The Academies are part of a movement by the school to provide meaningful opportunities for the community to engage with the arts on campus at UCI and to contribute to youth development. These college and career preparatory intensives for high school and middle school students, and exploratory arts and learning camps for elementary school students, enhance students’ 21st century skills, and support college and career goals, self-confidence and leadership.

Talented and motivated students get practical and technical instruction in small classes taught by experienced undergraduate and graduate instructors, professionals in the field and, in some cases, CTSA faculty. Students experience life as undergraduate arts majors with rigorous college level coursework, with the opportunity to live in residence on campus, and with the option to receive university credit for participating.

Visual artists learn studio art techniques, complete portfolio-ready artwork, find personal artistic direction, and explore the thought process of creating art. Courses include Digital Filmmaking, Drawing & Painting, Sculpture & Ceramics, Darkroom Photography and Digital Photography.

Advanced dancers strengthen their Ballet, Jazz and Modern technique base while learning new repertoire and creating their own original works. Master classes in Hip-Hop and Lyrical along with sessions in Injury Prevention, Improvisation and Audition Preparation may be included.

Aspiring actors train in acting for theatre, and audition preparation through coursework that may include Voice, Movement, Shakespeare, Singing, Music Theatre and Improvisation.

Musicians prepare for an education or a career in music through Vocal, Chamber, Guitar and Computer Music intensives. They will enhance their sight reading, understand solfège, develop ensemble performance skills, explore advances in music technology and improve musicality.

Students interested in everything from visual arts to engineering, develop robotic behaviors through programming and design, in a collaborative setting at the Beall Center for Art + Technology. Artistic practice is conveyed throughout the camp, with emphasis on stimulating creativity through imaginative thinking.

Young artists explore musical theater by creating characters and environments, learning dances and songs, and developing creative confidence through workshops presented by the Arts & Learning Conservatory.

Courses run throughout the summer; visit outreach.arts.uci.edu/summer-academies for dates, times, scholarship information and to register.  For more information contact Outreach at (949) 824-8976 or artsoutreach@uci.edu.

As UCI’s creative laboratory, the Claire Trevor School of the Arts explores and presents the arts as the essence of human experience and expression, through art forms ranging from the most traditional to the radically new. Our international faculty works across a wide variety of disciplines, partnering with others across the campus, our national-ranked programs in art, dance, drama, and music begin with training but end in original invention.
