Dance Visions Returns To the Irvine Barclay Theatre with Guest Artist Millicent Johnnie

DANCE VISIONS 2016 RETURNS TO THE IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE
WITH NEW WORKS FROM FACULTY AND GUEST ARTIST MILLICENT JOHNNIE

IRVINE, Calif. (January 31, 2016) -- Dance Visions 2016, the major production of the year for the Department of Dance at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts, premieres original works February 12-14, 2016 at Irvine Barclay Theatre. Drawing upon the fusion of dance, music and theatrical elements the outstanding faculty will reveal new and exciting performance works. Co-artistic directors Molly Lynch and Lisa Naugle weave a fantastic program with choreography from Shaun Boyle, Donald McKayle, Tong Wang, and new faculty member Charlotte Griffin. The team is joined by special guest choreographer Millicent Johnnie along with music selections performed by the UCI Symphony Orchestra conducted my Maestro Stephen Tucker.

Highlights from the concert include Tong Wang’s “Tales of Myrta” based on the ballet Giselle and carried out with the UCI Symphony Orchestra. Shaun Boyle presents “United we stand, Divided” a piece she created in collaboration with the dancers. The legendary Donald McKayle presents two works, “Bittersweet Farewell” and “House of Tears,” a theatrical piece inspired by the cruel repression by the Argentine military junta of 1976-83 and performed with members ot eh Etude Ensemble and dancer Chad Michael Hall. Charlotte Griffith creates “The Only Sound Against Stillness” with an original score from Alan Terricciano, pianist, and poetry written by Ted Kooser, sung by Robin Buck (tenor).

Famed choreographer Millicent Johnnie joins the creative team with the premiere of “Algoda-Reggae.” Johnnie uses the inspiration of Algodoal, a tiny island near the Amazon in Brazil as the inspiration for her piece. Long hailed as the ‘City of Reggae', and known locally as the ‘island of no cars’, Algodoal has enjoyed a thriving reggae scene for decades, but the scene is as atypical as its setting. Watch as the energy and culture fill the stage.

Dance Visions 2016 is a cornerstone in the two-year 50th Anniversary celebration for the school. Experience first-hand this collection new works and territories — a concert not to be missed! Learn more about CTSA at arts.uci.edu.
