AUGUST DANCE WORKSHOPS AT UC IRVINE
APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH AUGUST 10th!
America’s prestigious contemporary dance companies Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Alonzo King LINES Ballet will be in-residence at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts Dance Department this summer and offering two (2) week-long intensive dance workshops Aug. 20-31 for advanced dance students, pre-professionals, and professionals that would like to further their careers. Dancers must be between 13 and 28 years old (dancers over 28 with professional experience will be accepted). Advanced training in ballet or modern technique is required for all participants. Tuition for each workshop is $450, payable to UC Regents.
Enrollees will work with Hubbard Street directors and company dancers from Hubbard Street and LINES Ballet. They will also have the opportunity to observe renowned dancer Alonzo King’s creative process and watch his rehearsals. During each of the weeklong intensives, students will work together for six hours a day, five days a week. The program will offer training in ballet and modern technique, repertory, improvisation and discussions. Students train and perform under the guidance of artistic directors and professional dancers from each company. Class level will be determined by age and experience on the intensive’s first day of classes.
In addition to the workshops, supplemental activities may include attending open rehearsals with dancers and the company's artistic directors; attending performance receptions and meeting the company dancers, having an opportunity to meet with directors and attend an informal showing at the conclusion of the choreographic residency; and purchasing tickets to the two performances at the Laguna Dance Festival in September that include these two companies.
The application deadline has been extended! Applications will be taken online through August 10, 2012. A non-refundable fee of $20 is required upon submitting an application, as are a resume with proof of advanced training and a Letter of Recommendation from a dance school, instructor or artistic director. Upon acceptance, participants must submit payment in full by August 17TH or enrollment will be canceled. All fees are payable to UC Regents.
WORKSHOP INFORMATION FOR ATTENDEES
Welcome to the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Alonzo King Lines Ballet Workshops! Now that you have properly applied, enrolled and secured your position in the intensive, there are a few details you should know.
On the first day of each workshop, August 20th for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and August 27th for Alonzo King Lines Ballet please be sure to arrive by 8:30am at the UC Irvine campus for registration and sign in. Registration will take place at the UC Irvine Dance Department offices, located at 300 Mesa Arts Building, Irvine, Ca 92697. Click here to view campus maps and directions.
After registration you will be guided to your class and temporary technique level. You will also have the opportunity to pre-order a lunch in case you have not packed your own, so please be prepared to have $10 - $15 cash if you would like us to provide you with lunch and beverage service.
The daily schedule is 9:00am to 4:30pm, however on Thursday August 30th and Friday August 31st all students are invited to view a private rehearsal with both companies and Alonzo King from 4:30-7:00pm in the Gillespie Performance Studio 1100. Students are also invited to have a discussion with Mr. King after the studio rehearsals and attend an informal showing at the Claire Trevor Theater on September 14th at 7pm or September 15th at 6pm including a Q&A with both artistic directors Alonzo King (LINES Ballet) and Glenn Edgerton (Hubbard Street). In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet the company dancers and attend performances at the Laguna Dance Festival September 8 – 9. Dancer Attire: Please wear proper dance clothes for the workshops with hair neatly tied back. Leotard and tights or yoga pants for the ladies, t-shirts and tights with a dance belt for the men. All dancers must bring ballet technique shoes and ladies bring pointe shoes if you have advanced pointe training.

Course descriptions:
Ballet: This class explores the unlimited potential of classical technique that is grounded in tradition while pushing towards the future.
Improvisation: This class will be utilized as movement research for the repertoire the students will be learning. There will be a focus on the line between external and internal motivation, utilizing both task based and sensory based improvisation techniques.
Repertoire: Focusing on the diversity in movement styles of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the instructors will be teaching sections of recent work from resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo as well as contrasting choreography from in house choreographers that was commissioned as part of our DancEvolve series this past winter.

Course descriptions:
Ballet: This class explores the unlimited potential of classical technique that is grounded in tradition while pushing towards the future.
Modern: Contemporary choreographer LeeWei Chao creates a unique movement dialect by combining his training in Chinese and Balinese folk dance, Bharatanatyam, and elements of modern and ballet.
Repertory: Students will gain an intimate understanding of the evolving LINES Ballet vocabulary as former company dancer Carmen Roseztraten teaches selections from Alonzo King’s Ictus (1983) and In to Get Out (2000).
Improvisation: LeeWei Chao experiments with re-contextualizing movement sequences in various unique landscapes, helping students learn to trust the wisdom of the body without judgment or precondition.
Improvisation: Carmen Rozestraten discusses the choreographic tools used to manipulate and transform movement, encouraging students to embrace the limitless potential that can be excavated from a single phrase.
Contemporary Partnering: LeeWei Chao helps students develop confidence in themselves and their partners as they practice shifting and sharing weight, seeking connection with each other that is not limited to the body’s periphery.

Instructor Bios
LeeWei Chao A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Mr. Chao was a member of the Milwaukee Ballet Company from 1998 to 2005 after dancing with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, the Festival Ballet of Rhode Island, Singapore Dance Theater, Taipei City Ballet, and Henry Yu Dance Company. Since 2001, Mr. Chao has been guest choreographer and teacher for the Milwaukee Ballet Company, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Okalahoma City Ballet, Smuin Ballet, School of The Arts San Francisco, Milwaukee Ballet School Summer program, Milwaukee Ballet II, Ballet Pensacola, Midland Festival Ballet, Long Beach Ballet, San Francisco State University, Stanford University and Northern California Dance Conservatory. Currently based in San Francisco, Mr. Chao is a faculty member of Alonzo King Lines Ballet Training Program, Alonzo King Lines Ballet BFA program at Dominican University, the LINES Dance Center and Smuin Ballet Company.
Carmen Rozestraten A founding member of Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Carmen Rozestraten danced with the company for eight years. A native of Amsterdam, she has toured the world as a performer and educator, dancing in London with Dance Advance, in France with Josette Baïz, in Germany with the Dresden Ballet, as well as in the United Sates with Peninsula Ballet, Golden Gate Ballet and Dance Spectrum. She has taught in France at the Ecole de Danse, in Belgium at the Jan Faber Company, in Germany at the NY City Dance School, in Aruba at Sima Danza, in Curaçao at the School of Ballet, and in Venezuela at the International Dance Festival. She now works as a filmmaker and choreographer in addition to being a senior faculty member for the LINES educational programs and the Alonzo King LINES Dance Center.
Alicia Delgadillo Was born in San Francisco, CA. She received her training in the Royal Academy of Dance and Cechetti styles of ballet under the tutelage of Susan Hayward. After moving to Charlotte, North Carolina she continued her studies with Gay Porter and Bridget Porter Young at the Charlotte School of Ballet. In 2004, Delgadillo began studying full time with Daniel and Rebecca Wiley at Piedmont School of Music and Dance. She has attended summer programs with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, American Ballet Theatre, Juilliard, San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, and Springboard Danse Montreal. Most recently, Delgadillo had the opportunity to perform with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Alvin Ailey’s Memoria. Currently she is finishing her degree in dance with the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program where she has performed works by Sidra Bell, Jennifer Muller and Camille A. Brown. Delgadillo joined Hubbard Street 2 in August 2011.
Taryn Kaschock Russell (Director, HS2) Joined Hubbard Street Dance Chicago after an extensive career with the Joffrey Ballet. Starting in 1995 she spent seven years performing and touring extensively with the company. During that time, she expanded her artistry by dancing the principal roles in classic works by Agnes DeMille, George Balanchine, Martha Graham and John Cranko. She was also the first woman outside of David Parsons company to dance his signature solo Caught. Kaschock Russell joined Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in 2002 and the following January was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.” Her Hubbard Street repertoire included master works by Jirí Kylián, Nacho Duato, William Forsythe and Ohad Naharin. Kaschock Russell also participated in numerous original creations while a member of the company. In 2007, she became a member of Hubbard Street’s artistic staff and began teaching company class, conducting rehearsals and re-setting choreography. She was named Director of Hubbard Street 2 in 2008 and also coordinates Hubbard Street’s National Choreographic Competition. In 2010 Kaschock Russell conceived and directed the critically acclaimed Hubbard Street 2 family program Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure.
Andrew Wright Began his dance training at the age of eight. He has attended summer intensives with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and River North Chicago Dance Company. He also attended Springboard Danse Montréal where he worked with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and Batsheva Dance Company performing repertoire by Aszure Barton and Ohad Naharin. While completing his BFA in dance at Point Park University he received the “Rising Star in Dance” award and performed works by Gerald Arpino, Trey McIntyre, Toru Shimazaki and Kiesha Lalama. He joined Hubbard Street 2 as an apprentice in August 2011 while finishing his degree. Wright became a company member in January 2012.
