Join Jen Shyu for an intensive, hour-long Intermedia Improvisation Workshop, "From the Thought to its Holistic Expression" followed by a special duo performance by Nicole Mitchell and Jen Shyu.

Born in Peoria, Illinois, USA, from Taiwanese and East Timorese parents, 2014 Doris Duke Impact Award recipient JEN SHYU is an experimental jazz vocalist, composer, multi- instrumentalist, dancer, and producer. Having sung with Steve Coleman and in Anthony Braxton’s operas, she has produced six albums. A Stanford University graduate known for researching traditional musics in Taiwan, Korea,  and East Timor, Shyu studied Javanese Sindhenan and dance for two years on a Fulbright in Indonesia, culminating in a solo opera, Solo Rites: Seven Breaths, directed by filmmaker Garin Nugroho, which premiered at Roulette, Brooklyn. She has presented her music at Carnegie Hall (2016), Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Bimhuis, Salihara Theater, National Theater of Korea, etc. Shyu currently leads her band Jade Tongue as trio (with Mat Maneri, Randy Peterson) and quartet (with Maneri, Ambrose Akinmusire, Thomas Morgan, Dan Weiss), as well as touring SOLO RITES: SEVEN BREATHS, and will be performing at Angel City Jazz Festival with her trio Jade Tongue featuring Ambrose Akinmusire and Mat Maneri on October 3, 2015.
