SUMMER ACADEMY IN DRAMA
The Summer Academies in the Arts provide high school students conservatory-style immersion education and portfolio preparation through project-based learning in Dance, Digital Art, Drama, Music and Studio Art. Limited scholarships are available for qualified students. For an additional fee, qualifying high school seniors can receive college credit for participating in a Summer Academy.

Session 3: New Swan Apprentice
July 24 – August 7 or August 17, 6:30 pm – 10 pm
Apprentices for the New Swan Theater in Aldrich Park are active participants in the ongoing operation of a professional, outdoor, Shakespearean theatre. Apprenticeships occur largely in the evening, beginning with technical rehearsals for the New Swan Theatre’s production of The Merchant of Venice and The Comedy of Errors; these apprenticeships will continue through dress rehearsals and, optionally, performances. Apprenticeships are available in: Directing, Lighting, Costuming, Sound, Stage Management, and House Management. Instructors include the professional artistic staff of The New Swan Theatre. Recommended for high school age students. For qualifying high school students, this academy is worth one (1) college credit.
Session 1: Conservatory Actor Training
August 6 – 17, 10 am – 1 pm
This two-week training program is based on UCIrvine Drama’s M.F.A. in Acting. Students engage in a rigorous series of classes that provide a foundation of essential actor training techniques. Courses include: Acting, Movement, Voice, Speech, Stage Fighting, and Improvisation. The training culminates in a presentation of directed acting scenes, staged fights, and improvisations on the New Swan stage. Instructors include Professor Eli Simon, Professor Don Hill, Professor Richard Brestoff, Professor Annie Loui, Professor Robert Cohen, and graduate actors in the Drama program. Recommended for high school age students. For qualifying high school students, this academy is worth one (1) college credit.
Session 2: Professional Preparation
August 6 – 17, 2 pm – 5 pm
This two-week training system focuses on preparing young actors for the rigors of auditioning and interviewing for film, television, and theatre. Actors are taken through a step-by-step process that culminates in the acquisition of new audition monologues that can be used for university and professional auditions. Courses include: Auditioning skills, on-camera techniques, preparing resumes, headshot dos and don’ts, and interviewing techniques. The training culminates in a presentation of audition monologues on the New Swan stage. Instructors include Professor Eli Simon, Professor Don Hill, Professor Richard Brestoff, and graduate actors in the Drama program. Recommended for high school age students. For qualifying high school students, this academy is worth one (1) college credit.
