Faculty Artist Series featuring guest artist Malcolm Bilson with Cecilia Sun

Music Professor Cecilia Sun performs with Malcolm Bilson, the Frederick J. Whiton Professor of Music at Cornell University. Program will include Mozart, Variations on “Ah, vous dirai-je maman” K. 265, C. P. E. Bach, Sonata in G Minor, 1746, WT. 69/17, Beethoven, Piano Sonata in A-flat major, Op. 26, Haydn, Variations in F minor, Haydn, Fantasy in C Major, and  Mozart, Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 358 (with Cecilia Sun)

MALCOLM BILSON will be giving the inaugural concert on the Claire Trevor School of the Arts new fortepiano. One of the first pianists to devote his time to period instruments, Bilson has long established himself as a leading interpreter of Viennese classical and early-Romantic music on historic pianos. His pioneering recordings include all of Mozart’s Piano Concertos with John Eliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists, the first complete performance Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas on period instruments in collaboration with former students, and all of Schubert’s Piano Sonatas.

CTSA's new fortepiano was built by Chris Maene In Ruiselede, Belgium.  It is a replica of an instrument made in 1795 by Anton Walter, the leading Viennese piano maker of his day.  Smaller in both size and sound from a modern piano, this fortepiano is the type of instrument Mozart, Haydn, and the young Beethoven would have played.
