Usage

Progress

Library

1996/97 acquisitions substantially increased resource materials, primarily sound recordings, in a diverse range of genres needed for our new and continuing courses in music, dance, and musical theater.

100 music theater compact disks (Dept. of Undergraduate Education grant)

  • Jazz
  • Blues and gospel
  • Music for dance (particularly African and contemporary performance art)
  • Music of women composers
  • 20th century opera recordings and videos
  • 20th century American song
  • Classic rock
  • Electro-acoustic music
  • Western European art music (standard repertoire)
  • Traditional indigenous non-western folk music

A cooperative arrangement between the MMC and the Gassmann Electronic Music Studio allows authorized persons to check out portable recording equipment from the MMC for creative projects and assignments.

A design was generated for the proposed renovation of the MMC in anticipation of expected capital improvements in the near future. The proposed design allocates the upper floor of the present music building to the MMC.

The policy of maintaining a quiet library environment was more strictly enforced than in past years, resulting in greater student productivity.

Due to increased usage, Wednesday evening hours were extended to 9 p.m. from the original 5 p.m. closing time.

Computing

  • 3 Macintosh 7200/90 PowerPC computers for improved application use, especially for music and graphics
  • 1 Macintosh 7250/120 PowerPC server computer with updated software for improved network functionality
  • 8-port Lan hub isolates the MMC from campus network router interference for improved network functionality
  • 7 new music applications (28 copies in all) for use in the new electronic music curricula
  • A webpage was created and uploaded to the ArtSlab server to provide information and visibility of the MMC on the web.
  • Printing at no cost to users was implemented this year, quadrupling output.

Plans

We are planning to place a fully searchable and updated MMC catalog database on the web, possibly by the end of summer, 1997. The cost for additional software needed to put the present database on the web is approximately $1,700. It is advisable to investigate other library software before investing any more time and money in the present one. However, purchasing another library application may require changing from the Macintosh platform to Unix or Windows NT, requiring four or five additional computers in addition to the new software.

We are preparing, in conjunction with Michael Haggin of Advancement, and Dr. William Wong of the East Asian Collection, to apply for a prestigious Japan Foundation grant for the acquisition of a Japanese music recording and video collection to complement the Main Library's extensive East Asian Collection of print and art works.
